Hello New News, Goodbye Old News

Everybody say it with me in 3 . . . 2 . . . 1 . . . “Goodbye, Newsletter!”

Yes, the Disney Experience Newsletter has gone the way of the dodo. Since the move to the new server, there have been many problems. Some guests have had problems subscribing (or unsubscribing). Many often don’t get their Newsletter mailed out either because the mail program breaks in the middle of a send-out, or the messages get bounced back as undeliverable. It was a big problem, and I’m tired of messing with it.

Everyone has been deleted from the Newsletter, and you will have to check this site regularly for any news. Or, you can syndicate the news since the site now has a true RSS/ATOM feed. You can also go back and read older posts since they will be archived right here.

But, best of all, you can leave comments! Comments will be strictly regulated, and should be relevant to the main topic of discussion. Off-topic ramblings should be sent as an email, and anything unfriendly will be deleted and ignored.

I always enjoyed the newsletter, but let’s be realistic, you aren’t getting paid for this and therefor it should be something you ENJOY doing…after all, that’s one thing that’s always been obvious here – you did because you enjoyed it.

  • Nick Vanmatre:

Like many others, I have really enjoyed the newsletter and am sorry to see it go. However, it is so good to know that your work will continue AND be viewable at any time. Thank you for your efforts. They are truly excellent and rewarding for all of us. You also get great support from fans of all kinds. Thans, Nick.

I’m on the sight almost every day and have been for years, but I’ll miss the news letter. It’s great that my two favorite hobbies, Disney and Paper Models, are accessible here.

How do I set-up the RSS in my browser? I’ve never used it before.

    Thanks

    • Trader Sam:

There are several ways to use an RSS feed. Some browsers (i.e. Firefox and Internet Explorer 7+) let you add them as a bookmark folder (known as a live bookmark) that contains links to each post. Simply click on the orange RSS icon in the browser’s address bar or the “Site News” logo at the top of this page.

If you want to be able to read the posts without actually visiting this site, you’ll need an RSS reader. There are many out there if you search for them, and they can be used as stand-alone programs or integrated browser plugins.

Each RSS reader can do different things, so you may want to check into what’s available. I think you can get feed readers for your email programs, too, so you can check the feed while you check your email.

I was really disappointed by the fact that the Newsletter has been canceled =(
I hope you return it soon, since the site (as mentioned above) does not update regularly, and u may lose yourself and forget to check updates from time to time…

But I know that you will do what you think is best for disneyexperience.com since I have been a subscriber for quite some time and is a fan of this site!

    • Trader Sam:

Well, who knows. I may find a great mailing list program one day and bring the Newsletter back.

  • Brad:

Sam – I see no problem with losing the newsletter. Thanks for all the past effort and the wonderful site in general. Especially thanks for posting my Toad Hall contribution!

  • MagicJoe:

Like a podcast that I’m involved with, this takes a lot of work on your part and is very much appreciated. It will be no problem in checking this site from time to time without the need of a newsletter. Again, thanks for all the hard work that you do.

  • Michael Holmes:

I think that’s wonderful news! A small part of me may miss the newsletter but it pushes me to use the RSS in my browser to monitor your site for news updates. Keep up the great work!

  • John:

In the past I had always looked forward to the news letter. It is sad to see the news letter become a thing of the past.

Thank you for all the pleasure that your News Letter brought to my mail box Treader Sam.

    Stay well,

    John

  • Hupidubidu:

Wow Sam, thanks for notifying all of us. I’ve been a big fan of your site since 2005 and a Newsletter subscriber since 2007. I liked the Newsletter, but now I’ll get to visit the site on a daily basis just to check for updates which really isn’t a bad thing at all – this is such a wonderful site. There aren’t enough like it on the net.

And the comments thing is great! I can’t wait to see what other people have to say about your creations.

Keep up the great work, Sam!

  • TartanTink:

I don’t blame you a bit for dropping trying to get the newletter done with all that hassle! This will be fun to be able to make posts. Thanks for all of your incredible designs and hard work!

  • Extra:

Kinda a bummer as I like the site, but the content doesn’t change daily, so I’m not here regularly.

Surprised you could not use Yahoo or Google to send out your Newsletter like others.

    • Trader Sam:

From what I’ve found, Google and Yahoo have limitations that the Newsletter exceeds. At last count, the Newsletter had 1,056 subscribers, which is a hefty sum for any mailing list. There’s also the problem of third-party ads that are injected into the lists, which a) I don’t like, and b) goes against my contract with Disney.

Another thing that is always a personal “plus” is customization. I like to be fairly independent and not make it too obvious that I am using third-party applications. Customization is a great way to really make something look and feel like it truly came from the Disney Experience.

Look! Our first conversation! You can also reply to messages now, up to three levels deep.

  • Trader Sam:

I think this will be better than the Newsletter. It will promote more social interaction between everyone.

    Enjoy, and please don’t troll.
