Disney Villainous now has a third expansion\/stand-alone game, bringing the total number of playable Disney villains to 15! Disney Villainous: Perfectly Wretched<\/a> brings to the table 3 new villains, include Pete (early Mickey Mouse cartoons), Mother Gothel (“Tangled<\/a>“), and the much-requested Cruella De Vil (“101 Dalmations<\/a>“). Let’s dive right in!<\/p>\n

Inside the Box<\/h2>\n

\"Player<\/a><\/p>\n

\"Cruella<\/a><\/p>\n

As always, the player tokens take on semi-abstract forms to represent each villain. Cruella’s token is particularly unusual since it is made of two separate molded colors that have been fused together. I think it would have been cooler if the two colors were injected into the same mold at the same time, allowing the colors to swirl a little bit.<\/p>\n

The rest of the components are the same: boards, power tokens, reference sheets, rule book, cards, etcetera. But, there are also many new tokens that come into play.<\/p>\n

Gameplay<\/h2>\n

For once, I didn’t have to wait for my nephews to visit in order to play! Instead, I played solo using some basic rules that I found online and mixing in my own. Playing solo<\/a> allowed me to take my time and really study the play style of each villain. Villains that I previously had a hard time with are now much easier and more fun.<\/p>\n

Pete<\/h3>\n

\"Pete's<\/a><\/p>\n

I love the black and white art of Pete’s realm.<\/p>\n

\"Pete<\/a><\/p>\n

Pete’s goal is to complete 4 (out of 5) randomly chosen goals. These goals are typically hidden from other players, so Pete gets to be sneaky about it. At first, the goals seem tough to do, but he has a ton of allies to help him (the bandits are pretty useful).<\/p>\n

Mother Gothel<\/h3>\n

\"Mother<\/a><\/p>\n

That brat, Rapunzel, keeps wandering off to Corona. She’s a handful and needs to constantly be put in her place, all while gaining trust. I was 1 turn away from winning, but I failed.<\/p>\n

Rapunzel is always on the board, and always moving\u2014she is never discarded. Keeping her in the tower is a challenge, but the royal guards and the Stabbington brothers are a great help. Earning trust is a different story.<\/p>\n

Cruella De Vil<\/h3>\n

\"Cruella<\/a><\/p>\n

\"Puppy<\/a><\/p>\n

Cruella De Vil’s goal is to find and capture 99 puppies. Finding and capturing them isn’t too hard, but some can escape, so Cruella is always on the hunt. This is further complicated by the fact that she only has 2 allies to help find the puppies: Horace and Jasper. They are vital for winning, so hope that they don’t get discarded. Of course, there are ways to get them back quickly.<\/p>\n

Custom Storage<\/h2>\n

With Perfectly Wretched, I had to change how I store the entire game. I now require 3 boxes\u2014the core game box and 2 expansion boxes\u2014to hold everything.<\/p>\n

\"Game<\/a><\/p>\n

The core game box now contains the boards, the villain guides, reference cards, miscellaneous tokens\/markers, power tokens, and the cauldron. I’m pleased that the cauldron can fit into the core box again. I actually have 2 cauldrons, and they both fit.<\/p>\n

To keep things from jostling around, I used some of my spare time to create a couple of tuck boxes, and a sleeve. One tuck box contains the reference cards and villain guides with room for 24 villains. The other tuck box is for holding the miscellaneous tokens\/markers, again with room to spare for future expansions.<\/p>\n

The large sleeve keeps the boards corralled. If I did my math right, there might<\/em> be room for 24 boards. Fingers crossed.<\/p>\n

\"Deck<\/a><\/p>\n

Since my last Disney Villainous review<\/a>, I have rebuilt my custom card divider using black cardstock<\/a>. I also made some improvements, adding a hinged lid with labels (inside and out). The first full set of 12 villain card decks and 12 movers now reside within one of the expansion boxes.<\/p>\n

You can now download the deck organizer<\/a> (complete with stickers & labels) and build one for yourself!<\/p>\n

\"Game<\/a><\/p>\n

The 3 new villains start another set of 12 in a separate expansion box.<\/p>\n

If the game ever goes beyond 24 villains, I’ll be forced to rework everything, a fun but time-consuming endeavor. Of course, I’d also be happy with an official “big box” that houses everything. Some games do that when there are a lot of expansions.<\/p>\n

\"Drawstring<\/a><\/p>\n

As a last-minute idea, I created a drawstring bag for the power tokens. The bag is large enough to hold all of the tokens plus many more from future expansions. It was fun to make, and it fits perfectly with the game’s theme.<\/p>\n

Which Version Should Newcomers Buy?<\/h2>\n

Since Disney Villainous: Perfectly Wretched<\/a> is a standalone board game (2-3 players) in addition to an expansion of the core Villainous<\/a> board game (2-6 players), Wicked to the Core<\/a> (2-3 players), and Evil Comes Prepared<\/a> (2-3 players), which version should newcomers buy?<\/p>\n

If you’re a Disney villain fan and a board game geek, I still say you should go for the core game. You’ll have twice the villains to choose from, which is great for replayability, and you can have more players in a single game. You also get the nifty cauldron to hold your power tokens. Comparing online and in-store prices, the core game doesn’t cost much more than the expansions, and you’re getting more than twice the content.<\/p>\n

If you’re only curious about the game, any of the expansion sets will give you a taste of the gameplay. When you tire of playing the three villains, either graduate to the core set or purchase another expansion.<\/p>\n

Personally, I say buy all of them!<\/p>\n

How Many Players Are Too Many?<\/h2>\n

Combining every edition of Disney Villainous (to date) means that there can be up to 15 players playing across multiple games (the instruction book specifically states no more than 6 players per game). I recommend that players be broken into groups of 3-6. I personally wouldn’t go more than 4 players, although I’ve never played a 5-6 player game\u2014I’ve heard that it isn’t as fun. Three to four players just feels right as there is a lot that you have to pay attention to.
\nWith these small groups, players can have a tournament. Who can play the best and rise above all of the other Disney villains!?<\/p>\n

Verdict<\/h2>\n

Disney Villainous: Perfectly Wretched is a must-buy whether you own the core game, the expansions, or nothing at all. It’s fun, it’s beautiful, and the tight integration of both gameplay and mechanics with the villains’ storylines will make you fall in love with the game again and again.<\/p>\n\r\n
