I’ve been getting into building LEGO sets recently, beginning with the Disney Castle set<\/a>. I’ve found them very calming and fun. Continuing my journey down a childhood rabbit hole, I purchased the new LEGO Art: Mickey Mouse<\/a> set which I thought would be a unique piece of art to hang on the wall.<\/p>\n

I was mainly interested in the LEGO Art series because it is a form of pixel art, an art form that I am intimately familiar with since that is how the early computer icons<\/a> were designed.<\/p>\n

Although the set is labeled and marketed as “Mickey Mouse,” there is an alternative Minnie Mouse picture that can be built. All of the LEGO pieces needed for either image are included in the box.<\/p>\n

A third option is to buy a second set and combine both images as one large art piece. I didn’t really like the Minnie Mouse image, so I just stuck with Mickey.<\/p>\n

As advertised, a soundtrack<\/a> is available online to listen to as the art piece is built. I thought it would be music and some interviews. Unfortunately, it is only a little over 13 minutes long, and it cuts off in the middle of a sentence. According to the transcript, there should be over an hour’s worth of content. What happened here, LEGO?<\/p>\n

Assembly is pretty simple. In true LEGO fashion, the instructions are fully illustrated, and each step is meticulously documented. The main image is made up of 9 smaller squares, which makes it a lot easier to find and fix mistakes. Completed, the 9 panels are connected with pins.<\/p>\n

The special Disney LEGO piece that sits in the lower-left corner is optional. It can be replaced with blue studs. Personally, I like it.<\/p>\n

The art piece is pretty flimsy at first, but the backside is reinforced, and the frame ads extra support. Did I mention that the whole thing is made out of LEGO, including the frame and hanging accessories? That’s pretty cool; I thought there would be a special base that all of the LEGO pieces would connect to.<\/p>\n

Completed, the piece looks way better than images that I’ve seen online. It measures approximately 15.74\u2033 x 15.74\u2033 (40 cm x 40 cm) and 1\u2033 (2.5 cm) deep. It weighs a little over 2 pounds, and it has two wall hangers.<\/p>\n

I really do like having this LEGO Art hanging on my wall. I’ll have to keep an eye out for new sets, in addition to the Sith<\/a> and Iron Man<\/a> sets. Well worth the money.<\/p>\n
